I don't care for feeders in general, and would only use one in a place where I really couldn't get to frequently. I know guys have pics of mature bucks with their head in a feed trough, I'm just telling you what I experienced. This is just one man's opinions from a couple of locations. I'm not interested in what will attract only does and yearlings. For mature bucks, I don't buy the "dinner bell" theory. Put them HIGH in the tree, and set them to go off when no deer are around, and in a location where deer are not bedded within earshot. I believe spin feeders will work if you can make them effectively disappear. I pulled the feeders and had instant success the next year and ever since spreading by hand. I ran a couple of gravity feeders for years, and the majority of deer hammered it, but the older bucks wouldn't visit consistently if at all. Overall, throwing corn on the ground is the best way, but there are time/effort/disturbance issues. I do agree that they are more effective after deer have grown up using them. And I think there are several reasons for that. I believe from my own experience and those of others that deer react differently to feeders in different locations. I don't think you can go wrong either way. All deer are different of course, but if he fed at a "feeder" as a fawn, I believe he is more likely to visit a "feeder" throughout his life. if he visits a gravity fed feeder, he is likely to visit a spin cast feeder - if he does not visit a gravity fed feeder, he will likely not visit a spin cast feeder). Based on my experience, I don't believe a mature buck will visit/feel more comfortable with one style feeder rather than the other (i.e.

Some to feed, some b/c they were with a doe that was feeding at the feeder, etc. From my experience, mature bucks have visited both styles of feeders that I have used over the years. spin cast feeders.Īs far as mature bucks visiting either style of feeder. I've not noticed a difference with regards to the # of deer that feed at gravity fed feeders vs. You'll go through a lot more "feed" if you use a gravity feeder (that may not be a bad thing as you are feeding deer and other wildlife, but can get expensive).ĭue to the amount of corn I was buying when using gravity feeders, I did switch to spin cast feeders exclusively.
